Kentucky News Network operates on a standard barter and affiliate fee basis.  Our affiliates agree to broadcast a specified number of Network commercials and pay a small monthly fee for equipment costs in return for KNN's services. KNN will provide a receiver necessary to obtain our digital satellite signal as part of the affiliate fee arrangement, as well as technical assistance to install and maintain the equipment. A Network Programming Affiliate Agreement is jointly signed by both the station and the network outlining the responsibilities of each.

KNN provides our affiliates with a weekly commercial schedule. Weekly affidavits from our affiliates are required to confirm their compliance with these schedules.  Stations can cover their inventory requirement by broadcasting commercials that are a part of our news programs.  Affiliates utilizing optional programming or other KNN produced programs must agree to air those scheduled spots during those programs or during their regular broadcast day.  The weekly KNN commercial feed is fed daily via KNN’s satellite channel #1 at 9:07am and 3:07pm Mon – Thursday and Friday at 3:07pm for the following week.  Spots are also available on the internet via KNN’s FTP site.  KNN will strive at all times to assist our affiliated stations with their operational needs pertaining to the network's daily programming.

HISTORY OF THE KENTUCKY NEWS NETWORK

Back

With only 20 affiliates, the Kentucky News Network went on the air on April 3, 1978. Stan Cook delivered the first newscast. The network was owned by investors from financial institutions. They also started the Tennessee Radio Network in 1975. The group changed its name to American Network Group in 1986.

The first advertiser on Kentucky Network was the Federal Land Bank, with Red Man Chewing Tobacco joining soon after. The network went for many weeks with only PSA's on the air with no advertisers. Network programming was originally fed by phone lines to the affiliates. The conversion to satellite transmission was made in the fall of 1985.

The first sporting event broadcast by the network was the Kentucky-Indiana High School All-Star Basketball game in Louisville in 1978. Tom Stevens did the play-by-play with University of Louisville Coach Denny Crum doing the color. The first high school state basketball tournament was broadcast in 1979. In 1983, the Kentucky Network won the broadcast rights to University of Kentucky Sports.

The Kentucky Network was purchased by Clear Channel Communications in February 1992.  With the financial backing of Clear Channel, the network was able to improve the network in many ways including a new digital satellite system, new digital studio and automation and state of the art studio facilities. With the confusion of the name Kentucky Network and Kentucky Educational TV (KET), Kentucky Network changed its on-air name and identification to
Kentucky News Network (KNN) in late 1993.

Today KNN serves more than 90 affiliates throughout Kentucky providing 13 newscasts a day along with four sportscasts, agribusiness news, traffic and actualities. KNN is housed in the Clear Channel Louisville headquarters.

Back
Here are some of the questions we are asked most often by KNN affiliates.

Q. What is my station's commercial commitment to KNN?

A. KNN is able to provide our programming services by selling network advertising to statewide and national sponsors. As a KNN affiliate, you agree to air network spots on your local station as compensation for using our services. The network spot commitment for KNN affiliates is a
maximum of 125 minutes per week or approximately 21 per weekday, 14 on Saturday and 6 on
Sunday.

Q. If we do not air a particular KNN program that contains a network spot, do we still have to clear the commercials (s)?

A. Yes. A KNN spot that is not cleared within a KNN program must be aired in the same daypart in which it was originally scheduled. Day parts are defined as 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Consult your affiliation contract for more details.

Q. Are we required to make-good KNN spots that are pre-empted by our local programs, such as sports or other special events?

A. Yes. All KNN spots that are missed must be made good and noted on your KNN affidavit of performance reports.

Q. If we miss a network spot within a KNN program, how can we receive a copy of the spot to
air?

A. Two ways.  All new network spots are fed each weekday at at 3:07 p.m. and 9:07 a.m. (ET) during KNN closed-circuit broadcasts. We also have the spots posted on a FTP site for easy download from the internet.  A KNN Active Cart List list of all active spots is provided with the log each week.  It will indicate which spots are new for the week.  If you need a copy of any network spot, we will re-feed, email, or post the spot for you. Simply contact KNN Operations Director, Nathan Butler at (888) 566-7764 or nathanbutler@clearchannel.com
Q. Why are we required to fill out and submit affidavits of performance?
A Returning completed affidavits of network programs and spots cleared to KNN on a timely
basis is part of your affiliation contract. Just as you must do with local advertisers, KNN must
have documentation to prove that network spots were aired on each station for verification for network advertisers.
Q. Are we required to carry optional programs fed on KNN?
A. No. If you a KNN or KY Ag Net affiliate, you are only required to carry those respective networks’ basic program schedule. However, KNN offers these optional programs to affiliates as a bonus to add more variety to your programming and for additional opportunities for local spot sales. KNN affiliates have first right of refusal to optional programs. This means that if the KNN affiliate opts not to air any optional program offered by the network, KNN reserves the right to offer this program to another station within your market.
Q. Can we carry KNN programs on our other co-owned stations in our same market?
A. Yes, but with permission. KNN programs and spots are to be aired on the radio station that is designated as the primary KNN affiliate. However, KNN wants you to get the best use of the many programs the network offers and we will allow you to use your network service under certain circumstances on multiple stations under the same ownership in the same market.  Consult with KNN Affiliations Director for more details.
Q. What if we experience problems in receiving the KNN transmission ?
A. Even with KNN's state-of-the-art digital transmission, problems can happen. If there is a problem at our up-link facility, we will notify you as soon as possible by email, fax, and telephone. If you experience a problem at your station, KNN's engineering department is here to help with advice and equipment repair and replacement, if necessary. We suggest you first consult the engineering checklist in this manual.
Have any more questions? It's our job to find the answers. Please call us.
