FRANKFORT, Ky.-- A state lawmaker wants to create safe sites for exchanging custody of kids. Senator Brandon Smith filed the bill after three people were shot and killed in January. It happened during a custody exchange in the parking lot of Hazard Community and Technical College.
The bill would give courts the discretion to require such a safe site for custody exchanges. A safe child drop-off location would be defined as a building operated by state or local government with a metal detector and other security measures in place.
The bill passed out of committee today and now heads to the full Senate.
